In-office whitening lightens the natural shade of enamel in a single visit. Below: how the procedure works, who it suits and what the result depends on.

Whitening lightens your own enamel using a gel based on hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. The gel penetrates the pores of the enamel and breaks down pigments accumulated there over the years — from coffee, tea, wine, smoking and simply with age. The shape and structure of the teeth do not change; only the shade does.

In-office whitening differs from home strips and pastes in gel concentration and clinical supervision: the gums are isolated with a protective barrier, the gel is applied precisely to the enamel, and the process is activated with a lamp. That is why a single appointment gives a more noticeable result than weeks of home use.

How the appointment goes

1 Examination The dentist assesses the enamel and gums and records the starting shade on a scale. If there is decay or gum inflammation, whitening is postponed until it is treated.

2 Preparation Plaque and calculus are removed — otherwise the gel is applied unevenly. The gums are covered with a protective barrier.

3 Whitening The gel is applied to the enamel and activated with a lamp. This is usually several rounds within one appointment, with breaks.

4 Remineralization After the procedure the enamel is saturated with minerals, which reduces sensitivity in the first days.

Common questions

Does it hurt? The procedure itself is painless. For a day or two afterwards, sensitivity to cold and hot may increase — a normal reaction of the enamel that passes. If you already had sensitivity, tell the dentist beforehand.

How long does the result last? It depends on habits: coffee, tea, wine, berries and smoking bring pigment back faster. Home hygiene and regular professional cleaning extend the result. No one can guarantee exact timing — enamel differs from person to person.

Will crowns and fillings whiten? No. The gel acts only on natural enamel. Ceramic, composite and zirconia do not change colour, so after whitening older restorations on visible teeth are sometimes replaced to match the new shade.
