Dental treatment
Decay does not heal by itself and does not stop. The earlier it is found, the less tissue has to be removed and the simpler the treatment.
Decay starts as a spot on the enamel and gradually moves deeper. While it is superficial, treatment means removing the affected tissue and placing a filling in one visit. If the process reaches the nerve, pulpitis begins: pain appears, often at night and throbbing, and the tooth now needs root canal treatment.
Neglected pulpitis turns into periodontitis — inflammation moves beyond the root tip into the bone. Such a tooth takes longer and several visits to treat. That is why a check-up every six months is cheaper and easier than any of these conditions: at a check-up, decay is visible while it still does not hurt.
