The most underrated part of orthodontics is what happens after the braces come off. Teeth tend to drift back, especially in the first year: the ligaments and bone still remember their old position. A retainer holds the result — a thin wire behind the teeth or a removable tray worn at night.

Trays are not only for orthodontists. A custom tray made from an impression is used for home whitening and for remineralization — the compound spreads evenly inside it and does not leak out. That is exactly why the tray is made from an impression rather than taken off the shelf.

How the appointment goes

1 Examination The dentist assesses tooth position and enamel condition after wearing braces.

2 Removal and cleaning Brackets come off, adhesive is removed and the enamel is polished — plaque often remains under braces.

3 Impression For a retainer or tray an impression is taken — the appliance is made to fit your teeth exactly.

4 Fitting and follow-up The retainer is bonded, the dentist explains care and schedules follow-up visits.

Common questions

How long should a retainer be worn? For a long time — usually much longer than the treatment itself, and a fixed retainer is often left in place for years. The orthodontist sets the period: it depends on how far the teeth were moved and how well they hold.

Does a tooth gem damage enamel? The crystal is bonded to the enamel surface without drilling, so in itself it does not damage the tooth. It is important to brush around it as usual: plaque collects along the edge.

Can braces be removed at another clinic? Technically yes. But the dentist needs to understand at what stage treatment stopped and whether a retainer is needed — so it is best to bring X-rays and information from your previous orthodontist.
